School District 60 has partnered with the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at the University of British Columbia to measure and promote children’s social and emotional development, health, well-being, and assets through the Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI). The Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI) is a self-report questionnaire that asks children in middle childhood about their thoughts, feelings and experiences. The MDI is the first survey of its kind to gather information about the lives of children both in school, in the home and in the community, from their own perspective. The survey questions align with the BC Ministry of Education’s K-12 curriculum, which includes a focus on promoting children’s personal and social competencies.

Grade 5 students are invited to complete the MDI during class time between:

January 14^th and March 14^th, 2025. This is a community based survey and is not collecting data on individual students.

Skills Ready BC

All students in Mr Morrison, Mr Klaus and Mr Kattsir’s classrooms participated in the Skills Ready program on November 20, 2024.

The Construction Foundation offers hands-on trades exploration workshops delivered by certified tradespeople. There is no cost to these presentations and they bring in all needed tools and supplies. After an engaging and empowering session, each student takes home their completed project of copper bracelets (sheet metal Trade).

At Duncan Cran, one of four Framework for Enhancing Student Learning (FESL) goals is numeracy. Students will develop confidence and ability to use math in real life situations by developing their number sense. The MAP tool is shown below. Each week, we will explain one part of the MAP for parents.

The two ladders on the side of the template ask for skip counting up and skip counting down. For example, starting at 800, count up by 75 (800, 875, 950, 1025, 1100, 1175) and count down by 75 (800, 725, 650, 575, 500, 425).
