January 21st, 2014

Dear Parents,

Welcome back! It’s been a couple of weeks back at school and I hope your family had an excellent holiday and that 2014 will be a great year. This term is a very busy and an important learning time for the children.  Please make sure they are here on time, as it affects their learning when they come in late and it disrupts the learning of the other students in the classroom.   Classes start at 8:45.

Please make sure your child is dressed to go outside at recess and lunch time, as students are sent outside with temperatures -15 and warmer. Also, shoes, boots, jackets etc. should have their names on them for easy identification.  All students must have inside shoes for safety reasons.

Just a reminder that we are trying to save paper and are posting all of our newsletters on the Duncan Cran website, which can be found at – http://www.duncan.prn.bc.ca

Our librarian, Mrs. Flury has organized a very special fundraiser; students bring in $2 (a TWOONIE) and they will receive a Stuffy (Teddy) and a treat. If you have any slightly used (but not abused) stuffies to donate could you please send them to our librarian. The Toonie for a treat will happen in the sping. We will send specific dates in the near future.

The FSAs are a mandatory provincial assessment for all grade 4 students in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Numeracy. We will be completing the assessments from January 21st to Feb 8th so it is important that your child is here for these dates. Please contact the school if you have any questions.

Here is a link that highlights the FACTS about the FSAs from the Ministry of Education:

Our next PAC Meeting will be on Tuesday, January 28th at 7:30pm in the library. At the meeting, child minding will be provided by a fun, responsible Duncan Cran student. See you there…

The school date for the Science Fair is Feb 19th.  Intermediate students will need their projects completed by this date; as we will be having judges come to our school that day to examine the projects. All students from grades 4-6 must complete a science fair project. Primary students are welcome to participate.  They can see Mrs. Todd for more information or Mrs. Lowther (depending on who teaches your child. The District Science Fair is April 9th.

Anti-bullying Day is Feb 26th in BC.  We are selling pink T-shirts, sling bags, and silicone bracelets. We will be selling them prior to Feb 26 on a first come first serve basis.  Please see your child’s teacher for an order form.

Angie Pomeroy will be putting on a week long dance residency at Duncan Cran (Feb 24-27th). She will be teaching every class various forms of dance. The weeklong residency will culminate in a family dance on February 27, from 6:30-8:00pm in the Duncan Cran Gym. Everyone is welcome, students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Be prepared to kick up your heels and have some fun!

We are now accepting registrations for next year’s kindergarten class. Please bring in the child’s birth certificate and proof of residence when registering.  Please let your neighbors know if they have children of kindergarten age.
